The 10th Anniversary of the Calgary International Film Festival promises to be the highest profile yet, with almost 200 films from 100 countries and the launch of "Mavericks," where 10 progressive films by 10 of the most daring emerging filmmakers from the global festival circuit will compete for a $25,000 cash prize, furnished by American Express®. In addition to the popular four major series -- Canadian Features, Documentaries, Shorts, and World Cinema -- this year we have four must-see spotlights: a rockin' "Music in Film," line-up, a risque "Red Light" series, a "Late Night" series for things that go bump in the night, and a spotlight on "American Indies." At the forefront of the Festival’s profile is the launch of the “Mavericks Series,” offering ten progressive international feature films by ten emerging directors the chance to compete for A $25,000 CASH PRIZE, THE LARGEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM AWARD IN CANADA.
The prize is juried by a distinguished board and will be awarded by the “Honourary Maverick of the Year,” an established name-director who will be brought to Calgary and saluted for his or her body of film work.
Awards are also presented to Best Canadian Feature, Best International Feature, BestDocumentary, Best Short, Best of Alberta Short, and People’s Choice.
In addition to Canadian, American, and World Cinema features and docs, CIFF has fun with such popular categories as “Music on Film,” “Late Night Sci-Fi and Horror,” and the cheeky “Red Light Series” of risqué cinema.
