Photographer-storyteller William Yang returns to Calgary with a return to a motherland he never knew -- the Australian-born Chinese a stranger in his homeland. Yang takes us from the crowded streets of Beijing to the sacred mountain Huang Shan. Part social documentary, part personal observation, China is a journey of reflection on the meaning of culture and belonging. Accompanied by Nicholas Ng’s haunting live score for the erhu (Chinese violin), China becomes an unforgettable theatrical experience.
William Yang, third-generation Chinese-Australian, worked as a playwright from 1969-1974 and has since worked as a freelance photographer. China is Yang's ninth monologue performance, in a career that has seen him become Australia's most toured performing artist. In 1993, Yang was awarded International Photographer of the Year at the International Photographic Festival in Japan.
