With The Throwaways, Extra Happy Ghost!!!, Foonyap & The Roar, Deformer and Gods & Monsters
After years of turmoil within the Calgary all ages scene, a partnership has been struck between Central United Church and a new all ages music and arts group. Under the banner of “Local Library” the group will host a variety of activities including regular all-ages shows, a visual arts gallery, open studios, workshops and more.
To kick off the opening of the new space, Local Library is hosting the first all ages concert on Saturday, March 20. The five artists performing throughout the evening showcase one of the main sentiments behind Local Library: exposing great local artists of every age to Calgarians of every age. For this reason, besides hosting some artists more known to the general Calgary community (The Throwaways, Extra Happy Ghost!!! and Foonyap & The Roar, Deformer) the night will also host a band from the under-age scene who are not able to perform in local clubs (Gods & Monsters).
A large part of the programming of Local Library also focuses on providing a space for the learning, creation and display of new visual art. To showcase this aspect of its programming, Local Library will be hosting tours of its new space within the church throughout the evening. In addition, there will be an art opening featuring the work of Bree Horel held in the gallery.
The partnership between Central United Church and Local Library is the first of its kind in Calgary, with the church providing the space for the permanent residence of a secular arts group. Both parties are extremely excited for the prospects of this collaboration, providing a new arts-oriented space in the core of the city for Calgarians of every age.
