Under the direction of Kayte Parnell, the usually competent members of Workshop Theatre Society, play the rather less competent Farndale Dramatic Society, who in turn play the bizarre characters assembled at Chilly Old Checkmate Manor for the reading of the last will and testament of the late Sir Reginald Bishop……Confused? You probably will be, but this is nothing compared to the horror that confronts the ladies of the F.A.H.E.T.G. Dramatic Society, as almost everything that could go wrong does as they present their ambitious evening's entertainment.
The mystery in this murder mystery is that they manage to get something right now and again. Amid collapsing scenery, missed and forgotten lines, wrong props introduced at the wrong time and faced with a sound effects technician who is obviously away with the fairies – Mrs. Reece – the doyenne of the group – rises above the slings and arrows of outrageous dramatics to save the situation and provide the final inventive twist.
David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jr. have written 10 Farndale plays starting in 1976, with the ladies of 'Macbeth'. This murder mystery effort, the third of the series, world premiered in 1980.
