Contest: Win Tickets to Rachmaninov's "Vespers"

May 5, 7:30pm
St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, 219 18th Ave. SW
$25 adults, $20 students/seniors

Calgary audiences are in for a treat as Spiritus Chamber Choir and Edmonton’s Da Camera Singers join forces to present one of the greatest unaccompanied works for choir, Rachmaninov’s famous All-Night Vigil, known as the Vespers. Rachmaninov’s soaring melodies and rich harmonic colours are perfectly wedded with the ancient chant and vocal tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church. Also known as one of Rachmaninov’s two favorite compositions, he wrote the All-Night Vigil in one fortnight in 1915 during a period of great upheaval around the world and in Russia itself. Rachmaninov also requested that one of its movements (the fifth) be sung at his funeral.

The audience will be rapt by the sound of the combined choirs of more than 60 singers led by John Brough with Timothy Shantz performing as tenor soloist in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Calgary.

Calgary Culture is giving away two pairs of tickets to the event!
