Event Description:

Calgary’s biggest playdate of the year, the Calgary International Children’s Festival, presented by Qualico Communities, will be held May 25-29, 2010, throughout the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts and on Olympic Plaza.

During the five-day performing arts Festival for young audiences, over 80 performances and workshops will be presented by some of the world’s most critically acclaimed artists from Brazil, West Africa, Scotland, Belgium, the USA and Canada. Highlights of this year’s line-up include ScrapArtsMusic, with their wildly theatrical, fast-paced, percussion presentation on sculptural instruments made from recycled materials; Black Violin from the United States who will present an inspired fusion of classical and hip-hop music that crosses age, cultural and musical boundaries; and for those who enjoy the whimsical, the touching contemporary dance creation, At Nightfall, will leave audiences spellbound.

With more than 50,000 people taking part each year, the Calgary International Children’s Festival is the third largest Festival of its kind in North America.

Presenting a diverse line-up of performances and workshops in theatre, music, dance, puppetry and more, the Festival presents age specific programming for people 2 to 102!

ScrapArtsMusic (British Columbia) perform a wildly theatrical, fast-paced, percussion presentation on instruments sculpted from recycled materials. Most recently, they “rocked the world” during the final minutes of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics closing ceremonies when they played opposite rapper k-os;

Black Violin (USA) presents an inspired fusion of classical and hip-hop music that crosses age, cultural and musical boundaries. Their unique approach to music has allowed them to work with musicians as diverse as P. Diddy, Alicia Keys, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin and the Eagles -- among many others;

For those who enjoy the whimsical, the touching contemporary dance creation, At Nightfall (Quebéc), will leave young audiences spellbound. This production was presented at the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad;

Another performance not to be missed, which was also featured at the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, is Aché Brasil. Their high-energy presentation is filled with dance and Capoeira, an astonishing display of acrobatics, breathtaking kicks and self-defense tactics;

And for a truly international performance experience, the Festival is pleased to present Baobab. This is an inspiring story told through music, theatre and puppetry. A small boy on a great quest discovers, through his own courage, that he has the ability to effect positive change. Baobab was created in partnership between Théâtre Motus (Québec) and the SÔ Company (Mali), with creative assistance from Théâtre de la Ville (Longueuil), Hamadoun Kassogué (Mali) and Ismaîla Manga (Senegal).
