Calgary’s arts scene offers tricks and treats like seedy Parisian nightlife, zombies and aliens as part of this week’s must-see Halloween lineup.
Over the years, Hollywood has created countless ghoulish monsters, aliens, superheroes and fairytale characters. Trick-or-treat with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra with music from Spiderman, Hook, E.T. and Fantasia.
Visit the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts on November 1st for the Day of the Dead celebration. Join Calgary’s Mexican community and participate in meeting La Catrina, a female skeleton and one of the icons of the tradition, take part in a parade, the creation of a traditional altar and interactive activities and games for all ages.
For grown up ghouls, try Art Central’s 5th annual Monster Ball. Three floors of elegant edibles and devilish decor with money raised going to Studio C, a venue where artists with and without disabilities achieve collaboration, inspiration and immersion within Calgary’s art community.
The Halloween Masqueradio, presented by Green Fools Theatre, CJSW 90.9FM and The Uptown, promises an original spectacle production featuring music, mask, puppets and acrobatics. Get spooked by an angel somersaulting down the side of the building, a bag-piper and his haunting melody on the roof and zombies weaving their way through the crowd.
Experience the seedy side of the Parisian nightlife that enthralled artists Toulouse Lautrec and Vincent Van Gogh with Shadows of the Night at the Calgary Opera’s Grave Gala. Watch out for the gentleman of the dark Montmartre underbelly, complete with top hat and cape.
