Event Description:

This installation offers the viewer a glimpse of both the artifice in cinema and the construction of representation in art practice. The viewer brackets causal explanation and analysis to experience the total effect of the work, including the cinematic narrative of their own presence within the process. The gap between Turriff’s artistic intention and the performative aspects of the installation enacted by the audience provides a space in which the viewer may (re)introduce meaning and interpretation of/for the installation.  In participating, the viewer claims a place in an old growth forest, however fictive.

ROBERT TURRIFF is currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia.  He graduated in 2009 from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. Turriff’s artwork is situated at the intersection of art and craft, informed by his experience as a film industry technician and as an artist.

Event Description:

It's 1943. There's a war on and Bunsen Bay, Wisconsin is a town without men. The air is thick with undirected longing, and heavy with pointlessly deployed perfume. Helen Thorne, an aggrieved housewife turned reluctant detective, is drawn into a tangled web of murderous intrigue involving a ruthless heiress and her much younger naive stepmother in this film-noir inspired comedy.

Presented by Vertigo Theatre.

Event Description:

Inspired by Edward Burtynsky's view that his images can "function as reflecting pools of our times" we wondered what meaning Canadians would find in this photographer's masterfully composed images.

When compelled to reflect upon Burtynsky's images of landscapes transformed by industry– quarrying, mining, recycling, manufacturing, rail cutting and ship breaking - what would be our commentary on these landscapes shaped by our own desires and needs?

For this exhibition, 30 Canadians, representing diverse views and life perspectives, each chose a work by Burtynsky. The result is a combination of places and moments Burtynsky has photographed over the course of his career, combined with written commentary by the guest curators whose reflections are thoughtful, thought-provoking, sometimes surprising and always personal.

As an artist, Burtynsky has said that he searches for subjects that are rich in detail and scale yet open in their meaning. By considering the meaning others derive from these compelling works Encounters prompts us to look at these images anew, creating opportunities for dialogue about humanity's impact on the landscapes Edward Burtynsky photographs.

Guest curators for Edward Burtynsky: Encounters include Canadians from across the country:

Robert Bourdeau, Marc Boutin, Jim Brown, Barbara Budd, Ronnie Burkett, Elizabeth Cannon, Tim Caulfield, Cam Christianson, David Cohlmeyer, Phil Currie, Marie Delorme, Phil Fontaine, Glendale School Grade 5/6 Students, Tanya Harnett, Linh Ly Martin Magne, Jeff Melanson, Danny Michel, Bill Phipps, Ron Renaud, Tara Shaw, Fred Stenson, George Stromboulopoulos, Students from Bearspaw Adult Learning Centre Mark Tewksbury, Robert Thirsk, W. Brett Wilson

CANADIAN PREMIERE

“How can something be worth a million dollars in the morning and nothing by the afternoon?”

One of the most infamous scandals in financial history unfolds in a wild ride that’s almost too outrageous to believe—and yet it’s true. Combining modern multimedia, vaudevillian comedy and classical tragedy, the rise and fall of this industry giant exposes a dangerous game of perception versus profits. It’s the Canadian premiere that proves a penny earned sometimes isn’t worth a cent.

Presented by Theatre Calgary.

Event Description:

Bringing together the unique insights and talents of artists across the country, the plays in the 26th Annual Enbridge playRites Festival take their inspiration from the rolling Alberta foothills, the suburbs, the pages of the newspaper and the condo towers that rise above our heads.

Whether they are inviting us to laugh at ourselves or moving us to a hip-hop beat, whether they are challenging us to engage in conversation about the energy industry or reminding us of the power of a single gesture, these are stories that have never been told before. Experience them here first as they premiere at Alberta Theatre Projects.

Event Description:

James Bannerman (1957-2009) was uniquely situated to capture a street-level view of urban Calgary. First introduced to photography as a client at The Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre in 2006, he was rarely seen afterwards without the backpack containing his precious camera, laptop and photo files; picture taking was going to be his 'retirement plan'. The photographs he left behind speak compassionately about the intrinsic value of incorporating creative activity into daily life.

The Compassionate Eye of James Bannerman is being presented as part of the This Is My City Festival, an interdisciplinary festival of art from the margins. Festival runs from January 5 - May 2, 2012, in Calgary's downtown core. For additional information: www.thisismycitycalgary.ca
